How to Use Action After Submission on Connect Cards in Text In Church

Automatically tag or group contacts based on their multiple choice answer on a Text In Church Connect Card. Save hours of manual follow-up.

Written by Corey Piazza

Action After Submission is a Text In Church automation on Connect Card multiple choice questions. When a guest or member picks an option, Text In Church can automatically add or remove a tag, or add or remove them from a group. This removes the manual work of reviewing every response and tagging or grouping contacts one at a time.

This article walks through what Action After Submission does, the four actions you can trigger, how to set it up step by step, and how to edit it later.

What Is Action After Submission on a Text In Church Connect Card?

Action After Submission is a setting on Connect Card multiple choice questions that lets you attach a follow-up action to each option. When a contact submits the Connect Card and their answer includes an option with Action After Submission turned on, Text In Church automatically updates their contact record based on the action you chose.

This turns your Connect Card into more than a form. It becomes a way to segment your contacts, kick off follow-up workflows, or clean up your groups without any manual review.

What Actions Can I Trigger with Action After Submission?

You can choose one of four actions for each option on a multiple choice question:

  • Add to Group: Add the contact to a specific Group when they select this option.

  • Remove from Group: Remove the contact from a Group when they select this option.

  • Add Tag: Apply a specific tag to the contact when they select this option.

  • Remove Tag: Remove a tag from the contact when they select this option.

If you pick Add to Group or a tag action, Text In Church will show a dropdown so you can pick the specific group or tag.

How Do I Set Up Action After Submission on a Multiple Choice Question?

Follow these steps to add Action After Submission to a multiple choice question on any Connect Card:

  1. Open the Connect Card you want to edit and go to the second page, where you manage questions.

  2. Click Add Question and choose Multiple Choice. Or click into an existing multiple choice question to edit it.

  3. In the Ask your question box, type your question. Toggle Mark as a required field if you want an answer before the guest can continue. Turn on Smart Save to link the answer to a contact variable.

  1. Click Next.

  2. Choose Single Select if guests can pick only one option, or Multiple Select if they can pick more than one.

  3. Enter each option in the Option field. Click Add New to add more options.

  4. For any option, toggle Action After Submission on.

  1. Pick an action: Add to Group, Remove from Group, Add Tag, or Remove Tag. If you pick Add to Group or a tag action, choose the specific group or tag from the dropdown.

  1. Click Next to finish setting up the question.

  2. Save your Connect Card. Any contact who submits the card from this point forward will trigger the actions you set.

Example: Automatically Group First-Time Guests by Their Answer

Say you have a first-time guest Connect Card and you want to make sure guests with kids get added to your Kids Ministry group automatically. Here is how to set that up:

  1. Add a Multiple Choice question that asks, "Do you have kids attending with you today?"

  2. Set the options to Yes and No.

  3. Turn on Action After Submission for the Yes option.

  4. Choose Add to Group and select your Kids Ministry group from the dropdown.

  5. Save the Connect Card.

Now every guest who submits the card and selects Yes is automatically added to your Kids Ministry group. Your kids pastor can follow up with them personally without you needing to review responses one by one.

Can I Use Action After Submission with Single Select and Multiple Select Questions?

Yes. Action After Submission works with both Single Select (contacts can pick only one option) and Multiple Select (contacts can pick more than one) multiple choice questions.

With Multiple Select, every option a contact picks triggers its own Action After Submission. For example, if a contact picks two options that both have Add Tag actions, both tags get applied to their contact record.

Can I Set Different Actions for Different Options on the Same Question?

Yes. Each option on a multiple choice question has its own Action After Submission toggle. You can mix and match actions across options, or leave Action After Submission off for options that do not need follow-up.

For example, on a question that asks "How did you hear about us?" you might set:

  • Friend or Family to Add Tag "Referral"

  • Social Media to Add Tag "Social"

  • Google Search to Add Tag "Web Search"

  • Other with Action After Submission turned off

How Do I Edit or Remove an Action After Submission?

To edit or remove an Action After Submission on a question you have already saved:

  1. Open the Connect Card and go to the second page.

  2. Click into the multiple choice question you want to change.

  3. Click Next to move to the option setup screen.

  4. Find the option you want to update and toggle Action After Submission off (to remove it) or change the action and group or tag (to update it).

  5. Click Next to save your changes.

Any submissions made after your edit will follow the updated action. Past submissions are not changed.

When Should I Use Action After Submission?

Action After Submission is most useful anytime your follow-up depends on how a contact answered. Common use cases include:

  • Tagging first-time guests based on how they heard about the church

  • Adding contacts to a Kids Ministry, Youth, or Small Group based on their interest

  • Tagging event attendees by which service or session they picked

  • Removing contacts from a group when they respond that they are no longer attending

  • Tagging prayer request submissions so your prayer team can follow up quickly

Whenever you find yourself reviewing Connect Card responses and manually applying the same tag or group, Action After Submission can handle that step for you automatically.
