What are Message Variables?

Overview of how to create new message variables, how to edit your existing message variables, and how you can use them in your next message.

Written by Randalin Ward

Message Variables are dynamic placeholders you can insert into your messages to automatically personalize them for each recipient.

Common variables include first name, last name, and other contact details stored in Text In Church. When a message is sent, each variable is replaced with the corresponding information from that person's record, allowing you to send personalized messages at scale without writing them individually.

To get started:

  • Sign into your Text In Church account.

  • Go to your Account Settings in the lower left-hand corner of your screen.

  • Select “Message Variables” from the menu.

This will then take you to your current Message Variables.

To create a new Message Variable:

  • Click the orange Add Variable button in the top right corner.

  • In the first box, you will type the Variable Name. This will be what you type into your message to deploy the Message Variable

  • In the next section, you will click the drop-down menu and select what kind of information you will be adding.

Since we are adding our website, we will be clicking “Link”

  • In the last section, we will add our website link.

  • Click “Add Message Variables” button to save changes.

You will then be able to see the new Message Variable on that page!

Edit your Message Variable:

If you need to edit the link, you can click the three dots to the right of your Variable and select Edit.

When you want to add this website link to a message, you will type {WEBSITE} or use the Variables drop-down box to insert the Variable into your message!

That will then replace {WEBSITE} with Textinchurch.com in the message when it is delivered to the recipient.

Using Message Variables in Messages:

To use a Message Variable in a message:

  • Create a message.

  • In the body of the message type your message. When you are ready to add your Message Variable, type {WEBSITE} or add it using the Variables drop-down box.

  • When you see the purple bubble around the Message Variable, then you know you have typed it correctly.

  • Continue creating your message.

When you look at the message in the Sent folder of your Messages tab or in the Message builder, you will see the purple bubble listed.

But when the message is delivered to the recipient, it will be replaced with the correct value.

You can see in the Conversation History below that the website link was actually sent, not {WEBSITE}.
